Darwin’s community symphonic wind ensemble
Founded in 1993, the Arafura Wind Ensemble (AWE) is a community-based symphonic wind ensemble bringing musicians and audiences together across Darwin and the Top End.
Made up of dedicated volunteer musicians, AWE performs a diverse and contemporary repertoire for concert band. Much of our music draws on the rich wind repertoire of the 20th century and beyond, alongside arrangements of well-known works from film, stage, jazz, popular and classical traditions.
This variety gives AWE a distinctive musical character. From bold and energetic concert works to reflective pieces and familiar favourites, our performances showcase the colour, power and versatility of the modern symphonic wind ensemble.
Music across the Top End
AWE is equally at home performing in a formal concert setting or as part of Darwin’s relaxed outdoor lifestyle.
Throughout the year, the ensemble performs at community, civic and cultural events across Darwin and the surrounding region. Regular appearances at Café De la Plage at the Darwin Surf Life Saving Club have become a feature of the beginning and end of the Territory Dry Season, bringing live wind music to one of Darwin’s distinctive outdoor settings.

AWE also performs in churches and other acoustic concert spaces, and has a long history of contributing music to significant community and ceremonial occasions, including performances at Government House.
Wherever we perform, our aim is the same: to share engaging, high-quality live music with the community.
A community of musicians
AWE brings together musicians from a wide range of backgrounds and experience who share an enthusiasm for ensemble playing and making music for the community.
As a community ensemble, we provide musicians with the opportunity to explore challenging and rewarding repertoire while contributing to the cultural life of Darwin and the Top End.
Under the direction of Artistic Director and Conductor Stephen Pevely, AWE continues to develop its repertoire, performances and musical contribution to the Northern Territory. Rehearsals are every Thursday commencing at 7.00 PM.
