Arafura Wind Ensemble

Arafura Wind Ensemble Founded in 1993, the Arafura Wind Ensemble (AWE) is located in Australia's Top End City of Darwin.

This Top End concert band (or symphonic wind band) comprises volunteer musicians who love to bring a contemporary range of music to willing audiences.  Most concert band music was composed in the twentieth century and this gives our musicians and audiences alike the opportunity to explore a range of modern sounds that match our current lifestyles.

AWE is the only community-based concert band in the Top End. It enjoys a busy performance schedule in and around the Northern Territory cities of Darwin and Palmerston.

Whether you are looking to join a friendly musical group or need an ensemble to play at your event - you are sure to be happy being involved with the Arafura Wind Ensemble - get in touch, we'd love to hear from you.

Our History

Arafura Wind Ensemble 1AWE was established in March 1993, as a result of a community survey conducted by John Young, a musician, teacher & resident of Palmerston (Northern Territory, Australia).

AWE's development comes from founding conductors, who include Christine Williamson, Brian Cramp and Geoff Carter. Stephen Pevely is AWE's current Artistic Director and Conductor, with regular support from guest conductor, Michael Loughlin.

Since its foundation, AWE has performed at many and varied venues and functions in the ‘Top End’, ranging from Government House, World Solar Car Challenge, ANZAC Day & Australia Day functions as well as Civic, school and community concerts. In February 2022, AWE showcased the 80th commemoration of the Bombing of Darwin with a musical tribute over two days. AWE then performed the Bombing of the Top End at the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre in Katherine.

The Arafura Wind Ensemble comprises approximately thirty-five musicians who come together from all walks of life to enjoy community music making. AWE provides an avenue for all musicians in the Darwin, Palmerston and Litchfield communities, to play a wide range of music -  from the classics to Broadway, popular and traditional, jazz to marches.

The Arafura Wind Ensemble Inc. performs for the community, corporate events and also in collaboration with other arts groups such as the Darwin City Brass Band, the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Army Band Darwin
